IES Holdings buys 80% of Bayonet Plumbing, Heating & Air-Conditioning

· Tampa Home Watchdog

Most Tampa Bay home-service acquisitions disclose nothing about size. This one disclosed both revenue and headcount, and the numbers are still the largest in the local record.

On December 21, 2020, Nasdaq-listed IES Holdings, Inc. announced it had acquired an 80% interest in Bayonet Plumbing, Heating & Air-Conditioning of Hudson, in Pasco County. Bayonet, established in 1977, served the Tampa and Orlando markets with more than 500 employees and approximately $86 million of revenue in the twelve months ended September 2020. The purchase price was not disclosed (Source: IES Holdings, 2020).

President and CEO Robbie Blankenship and founder Robert N. Blankenship retained 20% of the business, and Robbie Blankenship stayed on to run it. IES said Bayonet would continue operating under its own name within the IES Residential segment.

IES CEO Jeffrey Gendell said the transaction “strategically expands our geographic footprint into the attractive Florida market,” adding two complementary trades to the company. Blankenship said the partnership would support the company’s growth objectives while operations continued.

Two things that make this deal unusual

The retained minority stake. Most platform acquisitions in this market are full buyouts, or leave a small rollover that is not disclosed. A publicly announced 20% family retention with the founder’s son still running the company is rare in the Tampa Bay record.

The buyer is a public company, not a fund. IES Holdings is listed on Nasdaq and files audited financials with the SEC. That is a different ownership model from a private equity platform: no fixed hold period, no fund-level exit clock, and disclosure obligations that make the parent’s finances readable by anyone. It is still outside ownership with growth targets — just targets set by public shareholders rather than by limited partners.

IES continued building in Florida. On May 18, 2021 it acquired Edmonson Electric to expand its Florida presence (Source: IES Holdings, 2021).

Where it sits in the local record

By disclosed revenue, Bayonet is the largest Tampa Bay trade-services business documented changing hands in this database. For scale: Environmental Pest Service, sold to Rentokil three weeks later, was an $82 million business with about 640 employees. Most other local deals — Red Cap Plumbing & Air, Acree, the six Strikepoint brands — disclosed no figures at all.

That silence is normal. Private buyers have no obligation to publish price, revenue or headcount, and most do not.

What it means for homeowners

Not all outside owners are the same, and the distinction is worth understanding before you assume anything from a change of control.

  • Public ownership is more visible. A Nasdaq-listed parent publishes segment results and risk factors. You can read what management tells investors about residential margins. A private platform tells you nothing.
  • Hold periods differ. Public companies generally hold acquisitions indefinitely; private equity platforms are structured to exit. The pressure on a business changes with that timeline.
  • Local leadership retention is a fact, not a promise about the future. The Blankenship family retaining 20% in 2020 is documented. Whether that structure persists is a separate question, and the only way to know is to check the current record.

Ownership type is one input among several. Compare bids, read what a maintenance agreement obligates you to, and confirm who the legal entity on the contract actually is.
